Restorative Practices

Today we watched a Ted Talk by Kay Hutcheson on Restorative Practices.

Kay's husband was tragically killed and she talked through how she dealt with this. She could either react like the community expected her to or she could model to her own children how to react in a restorative way.

To relate back into the classroom... do we want to give children 'time out" or "time in?" Do we want to teach them to be "human beings" or" human doings?"

My goal from this video is to really make sure I give all children time to talk through what went wrong and to highlight the importance of talking through problems instead of reacting and handing out consequences.

Another point that was highlighted for me was that even those children who are not buying in to having a restorative chat will eventually 'click" 1 or 2 years on.

I loved this TED talk. Such an inspiring woman. I mean really her situation was so unfortunate yet she was able to focus on the "human being" rather than the "human doing".

So how do we relate that back to our classrooms? The idea of a 'time in' is a great idea. I do however think we need to scaffold the children so they can participate and engage in a 'time in' so that everyone is heard and it's a problem solver, not escalating the issue.

Yes I agree some children may not buy into the restorative chat but will once it becomes second nature to those around them. This is true to adults as well don't you think?

  2. Hi Marcelle
I too was incredibly humbled by the choices Katy made in such dire circumstances! What an inspiration. I love her terminology - human beings, not doings and Time in - as opposed to time out. It was certainly thought provoking. I am heartened at your attention to the reaction. as adults we do have a choice in how we react and if we can react with more heart and attention to solutions that ensure we alert children to their part in this then even those children not quite ready for the message will be exposed to human beings!
